The Artists

Master Lutz Haufschild

Master Lutz Haufschild

R4 Kaohsiung International Airport Station

Lutz Haufschild is an internationally recognized glass artist whose thoughtful integration of art and architecture has resulted in major commissions in the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Taiwan. Trained in Germany he has lived and worked in North America for over 30 years.

Haufschild is captivated by the shaping of natural light in architecture and considers light his true medium. By combining innovative fabrication methods with sensitive aesthetic treatments, he creates distinct and harmonious work. His artistic responses vary, depending on the architectural requirements: when appropriate, his dialogue with the space can be colorful and bold. At other times, he prefers simple compositions, using layers of clear beveled glasses and prisms to create a timeless elegance.

Narcissus Quagliata was born in Rome, Italy in 1942 where he studied painting with the metaphysical painter Giorgio De Chirico. Narcissus Quagliata has twice received, grants from the National Endowment for the Arts for his work in the U.S. Presently, his main residence is in Mexico, but he also works in the United States and Europe, as well as in the Far East.

Three areas are the focus of his artistic activity:

- The exploration of light and glass as vehicles of artistic expression
- A lifelong fascination with the figure
- An active interest in how art impacts our lives in private and public spaces

His fine art works, in glass and watercolors, have been exhibited and collected by major museums and private collectors internationally.

During the 70’s and the 80’s and early 90’s Narcissus Quagliata executed over a hundred commissions primarily in private residences, in the US, Europe and Mexico, but starting from the mid 80’s he also began to integrate his work into public spaces.

Ron Wood

Ron Wood

R17 World Games Station

Light becomes the choice “art medium” for Ron since he could remember. Glass, the best conduit of light, naturally becomes the material of his artworks. Ron believes that Light - captured, reflected, refracted and projected through glass allows the environment itself to be transmitted to the viewer, and the viewer becomes a part of the environment.

The special challenge of working with glass on an architectural scale fascinates Ron. His current experiments involve light moving through multiple sheets of double etched glass and mirror. He designs in the multiple dimensions; his artwork, regardless 2D or 3D, has sculptural considerations.

The perceived kinetic behavior of light passing through multiple panels of carved glass is conducive to manipulating the fourth dimension of time and space. The nature of the glass medium can help the viewer experience different spheres or states of mental association, because psychic or meditative states are activated by sensory stimuli, and because light communicates in a universally understood language.

Christian Karl Janssen

Christian Karl Janssen

R17 World Games Station

There are two extremes in architectural art glass: on one end, artisans exercise virtuosity of craft in restoration, and at the other, artists marry the material with new technologies and artistic expressions into one inseparable unit. Advances in digital tools and material technologies have approached the micro scales, their inclusion in films and transparent media is inevitable. Pervasive digital processing will avail sculptable display systems. In the next 5 to 10 years, technology limitations will be blown away and empower the artists to expand their creative freedom.

Janssen’s compositing skills are unrivaled. With a rare combination of mathematic disciplines and artistic training, he often arrives at solutions through mathematical analyses while maintaining a spanking aesthetic expression. Using advanced modeling-animation software, Janssen virtually explores perspectives, a true artist dancing between art and science with extreme grace and ease.

A loving husband and a devoted father of two sons, Janssen appreciates “the professional context of celebrating life and opportunities.”
